I am a super visual person. Having a visual representation in front of me helps to ensure goal success.
When I started doing reflective work a few years ago, I began to incorporate Hero’s Journey Dream Cards into the visualization.
What’s the Hero’s Journey? Based on the research of Joseph Campbell, it is a universal story where a hero leaves her home to go on an adventurous quest, facing difficult challenges and meeting helpful friends and mentors, and learning valuable lessons along the way. After overcoming these obstacles, she returns home stronger and wiser. She is on a transformative journey of self-discovery. (Think Disney characters Moana or Mulan; Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games”, or Rey in “Star Wars”.)
The Hero’s Journey is just as much a roadmap of our own transformational journeys. The Dream Cards, created by Kelly Sullivan Walden, are a gorgeous visual representation of this roadmap. I replace the visual each week for 52 weeks.
The image is my authentic place card -
The experts I follow
My money goals
Who I am astrologically
What hats do I wear
What my credentials are
My Signature Statement
My values, strengths, skills, and concepts that define me
My word of the year
The card includes a saying for me to think about that week
What would you put on your place card? (Reach out to me if you aren’t sure!)
Now I have all the information in front of me to move on to my “DO” goals that make my BE goals purposeful. Part of this is thinking about the resources I have - time, money, and energy - and how I can divide them up:
I will invest time, money, and energy for:
My family … By blocking time daily
My friends … By blocking time weekly
My business partner and clients … By blocking time daily
Causes that matter to me … By blocking time weekly
My health … By exercising daily
I will challenge myself to incorporate sharing my thoughts and adventure with all of the above.
The final step are “ACTION” goals. What am I actually going to do that is aligned with who I am so I can move the needle forward right now. This is the laser focus time …
I will take my son driving (hours for his license) one hour each day.
I will row with my daughter 3 times a week plus do something “girly” once a week.
I will sunset kayak with my husband 3 days a week and one weekend morning kayak.
I will kayak once a week with a different friend.
I will post one Serendipitous Rebel video while kayaking a week.
I will block 2.5 hours per day (Monday-Friday) for time with Krystal and clients.
I will send emails to my elected officials weekly to push for causes that matter to me.
I will row 60,000 meters a week (Monday-Friday).
And now I fill my calendar with action items that fill me up. That make me happy. That make sense.
xoxo
